Hobby Single Speed Bike

17.06.2010

After one of the longest inceptions in 'bike curation' history—involving much drunken discussions on possibilities for the final outcome—the Hobby is finished. Well, almost.

The bike is built up around an Australian-made Hillman track bike frameset that was completely stripped, re-painted white and decked out in livery of the classing Norwegian chocolate bar called 'Hobby'. The Hobby logo has, for all intents and purposes, remained unchanged since its debut in Norway in the early 70s. (Could you guess the decade??)

Component-wise, it's a bit of a mongrel, with a Shimano drivetrain (Dura Ace 7400 road cranks, bottom bracket and BMX freewheel), and the mind-blowingly-aesthetically-biased Campagnolo Delta brakes doing their best to stop the bike.

The downtube decal

Artwork was scanned and re-drawn to be re-producable by a vinyl cut process.

The Deltas

Man, what can I say about these that hasn't already been said or documented in extreme graphic detail? Nothing.

The paint detailing

This was hand-painted by me and was infact a nightmare. Happy that I pushed through the pain barrier though..

The paint detailing

A coincidence? Yes. The letter H is machined into the fork crown to mark the Hillman frame. Worked out nicely for the Hobby.

The front end

Complete with barbershop striped handlebar tape and reversed (dropped) moustache handlebars.

The bike

Rear Delta Brake detail

Classic materials and colours. Bicycle design really did peak with lugged steel frames and machined Aluminium components.
